Tips for Damaged Dentures
1) Do Not Attempt to Repair Your Denture with Glue
Even if it’s a clean break, using any kind of super glue found at your neighbourhood hardware store is a bad idea. Sure, the denture might adhere, but once the prosthesis is back in your mouth, the moist environment could weaken the glue, and cause the denture to break off again when you’re chewing. This presents a serious choking hazard. But, even if the glue can withstand a moist environment, there’s another important reason to steer clear of the super glues: they’re highly toxic. Over time, glue that sits in your mouth will release toxins into your body that can impact your oral and overall physical health. The type of glue you find on store shelves is not the same type used by medical practitioners. At Beddington Denture Centre, your NE Calgary denture clinic, we use medically safe repair acrylic to join and bond the broken pieces. These repair acrylics are stronger and can withstand strong biting force and a moist oral environment.
2) Keep Your Denture Moist
Place your prosthesis in an overnight solution to prevent it from drying out. In the event of a break, find all of the broken pieces and place them in a closed container with a moist paper towel in it. This will allow your denturist to more expediently perform the necessary repairs.
3) Do Not Attempt to Bend, Pry or Manipulate the Clasp
Do not try to adjust any part of the metal framework. This precaution prevents you from accidentally causing further damage to the denture. Wearing a misshapen denture for a prolonged period of time will agitate your gums.
